Meet Taohuayuan, the 32-bedroom, 32-bathroom home sitting on an island in the middle of a misty lake in China.  It’s currently listed for sale at a whopping $201 million – or one billion Chinese Yuan.

At that jaw-dropping price tag, it’s the most expensive home on the mainland, according to Mansion Global.

“It is so far the highest luxury listing we have in China,” Jim Hao vice chairman of Beijing Sotheby’s International Realty said.

The photos show a sprawling, well-equipped compound with mist floating over water and rock gardens, luxurious interiors and dramatic views over the lake.

All 32 bedrooms face south, and if the many bedrooms weren’t enough to impress you, there’s also a pond, swimming pool, wine cellar and spectacular gardens.

The name of the house, ‘Taohuayuan’, means Utopia or Peace Blossom Land, and it’s easy to understand why.

The newly-built property, which took over three years to construct, is in the style of a traditional Chinese home with upturned roofs and a courtyard-style layout.

To put the cost of the home in perspective, the asking price of $200 million is more than twice the price of La Mer, Australia’s most expensive sale, but about half the price of the Chateau Louis XIV outside Paris, the world’s most expensive property, which clocked up a whopping $A419 million.

There has been one property on Chinese territory sold for more – in Hong Kong.

A home in the very exclusive area at 15 Gough Hill Road on The Peak sold for around $HK2.1 billion ($A364,475,480) according to the South China Morning Post.  The buyer was the chairman of investment company Cheung Kei Group, Hongtian Chen.

Listing agent Juan Zhao Feng also says it’s garnered some attention from overseas buyers.
